VUCA

VUCA is a framework for assessing dynamic environments (that is, anything but a steady state). It is an acronym which represents Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity.

  • What are the most appropriate/productive operational and leadership strategies for each of V, U, C and A?
  • What are the VUCA trends in the client’s environment/market?

OODA

Originating in military planning, OODA is a rigorous decision making process, well suited to strategies for managing uncertainty and ambiguity. The four elements of OODA are:

  • Observation – absorbing what you can see and hear (data)
  • Orientation – what is your position and situation – this will affect what you can observe
  • Decide – the mental process of committing to an action or plan
  • Act – executing your decisions

Within each of these areas, we can explore in more depth aspects such as perception, unconscious bias and conflict. Skills to improve these phenomena can be practised with a view to implementing back at work.

Circle of Competence

Warren Buffett is a strong promoter of the Circle of Competence. It distinguishes between

  • What we definitely know we know
  • What we think we know
  • What we definitely know we don’t know

When we are making decisions and deciding policy in uncertain and ambiguous environments, it is critical to know the boundaries between these circles.

Challenge individuals to recognise their own circles, when applied to their role in the organisation

Ensure that, where appropriate, decisions are made collaboratively and that all the expertise in the team is known and utilised.

Agile Mindset

Organisations need to think and act in an agile way when faced with uncertainty and ambiguity. The Agile Move simulation is a series of competitive operational and leadership challenges which encourage agile principles, such as frequent delivery of value and experimentation to underpin learning from failure.

Agile operational and leadership principles

Creating and agile environment to meet uncertain and ambiguous conditions.
